Since the old one got erased, I figure that this game deserves some more attention.

http://minecraft.net/

Minecraft is pretty much a sandbox game that takes place in the largest sandbox ever created. The game itself is a fun open-ended game where you can pretty much build and create pretty much anything in terms of structures. The goal is to basically survive the night, as that is when all the enemies spawn. Their goal: kill you. Your task, build shelter and survive their onslaught throughout the night. However, if you just want to build and create stuff, you can turn enemies off and just build to your hearts content.

Here are a couple videos as to the gameplay, and the types of things that can be done there.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14KwzYBjm-8
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UVFTmqXFLX8

A link from the Something Awful Forum giving a better explanation on the game.

So, while it is $13 for what is effectively an Alpha/Beta of this game, it is more than worth that cost. For those who like to just futz around and create massive buildings from scratch, dig massive tunnel networks, ride boats up and down waterfalls, or just waste time exploring a randomly generated world in pixelated glory... this game is that and so much more! Plus, the price will go up once it's finished.

I highly recommend this game for pretty much anyone who likes to create.

Oh, multiplayer is improving every week :) Who here also enjoys playing this game?

I bought the game but I can't get the fucking thing to run because Windows 7 is a piece of shit that installs Nvidia drivers for ATI cards and somehow blocks you from even installing the drivers you want. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

Wow, turns out I'm like 9 kinds of retarded. I could have sworn that I had a ATI x1950 PRO card so I was installing the shit out of ATI drivers, and I couldn't for the life of me figure out why Windows 7 insisted on installing drivers for a Nvidia 9800 GTX+. Why would it choose such a specific driver incorrectly?!?! It's not like it's written in GIANT LETTERS (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130339) on the video card.

Yeah, so I'll try installing the real Nvidia drivers tonight and see what happens. Sigh.

this weeks minecraft patch was just released, minecraft.net is completely slammed so logging into the game (and reebosak.net:143) is hit or miss. just a heads up since i just booted people off the server to restart. our new glass/lava room is coming along nicely, we'll post pics when we're done

release notes from Notch:

Seecret Saturday 1! But I failed Biomes AGAIN!
The update is out, and I guess the biggest feature is Sneaking. Press (and hold, for now) shift to move slower. You won’t make sounds, and you won’t crush plants, and you won’t fall off ledges.

The big feature was supposed to be biomes. Again. And again I had to abort and rollback the code to get a release out. Again.
I must stop trying to do it in a single sitting. Now I’ve spent almost two full days on it! I won’t work on it again until I can dedicate an entire week towards it.
The main problem is that the transition between different biomes looks horrible. It’s either a chaotic wasteland of random blocks, or a sharp border of sudden ice. Actually generating the biomes themselves is interesting, and I can reuse a lot of the ideas from indev with the different level types. The floating island biome is kind of slow to generate, because it adds a second pass to fix waterfalls along all the edges.

The hell biome will be used for an alternate fast travel dimension. Have you read Wheel of Time? That.

There are a couple of other new things hidden in this release, but nothing game changing.

good news about the last crash: glass/lava room is BACK! (pre-burned down state)

bad news: new floating island is gone, among many other things i'm sure.

so, server update: i figured out that the server is crashing because it's running out of memory. the new amazon instance is a micro instance (only $15/mo instead of $64/mo - no including bandwidth/storage). micro instances only have 613Mb of ram, which is too little for the stupid bloat code that is minecraft server. i've added a 1.6Gb swap to the instance giving us a bit more than 2Gb of "memory", although the load of the server suffers quite a bit now. If the load becomes noticeable (laggy forums, etc) i'll consider switching back to the $64 instance.

brien
09-20-2010, 06:27 PM
bah, it's laggy as hell whenever more than like three people hop on. i'll try to pop this up on the $64 instance tonight maybe. hmmm.

Hey brien, is the $64 amazon instance a one time thing or per month? I could be convinced to chip 5 or 10 bucks to get a decent server, but probably not 5 or 10 per month...

yup, it's $64/month. the new micro is shy of $14 so essentially i'd have to pay $50 more per month to maintain a minecraft server. i don't think i love any game enough to shell out $50/month on it. i'm not really sure what to do now, does anybody else have a server somewhere where we could run it for cheap?

Kyrin

Gnorlin

Awesome "glitch" alert:

If you have a tool that's about to break, throw it on the ground and pick it back up. It will be completely repaired. Quite handy if you've happened upon enough diamonds to make a set of tools. :)

Also, whatever you do, do not make minecart tracks and then try to ride a minecart on them in multiplayer. It's massively buggy at the moment. The ride is very jerky and you end up with 2 minecarts neither of which you can pick up and one of which just sits at the end of the tracks and twitches. Also the server log fills up with messages saying "Player moved wrongly!"

Even that's not the entire map, since 1/2 or more of my road (El Gran Camino del Visón) is off the map to the lower right (east in the game world). Near that end of the road, there's also my tower and Arvenis/Gnorlin's old mine.

Gnorlin
10-11-2010, 05:42 AM
Yeah the tool I found to make the map is real vague about the parameters that it uses to generate the map. You give it 2 positive numbers and 2 negative numbers and supposedly it does that much area around your spawn point, but since I'm using the server map files I'm not sure whose spawn point it would be using.

I made a night map too that I haven't uploaded, it looks really cool. Especially the multitude of forest fires that we've started and my lava ball.

Gnorlin
10-11-2010, 07:53 PM
There's now a "river" in the sky that goes between deso's castle and the old reebosak base, it's way faster than walking. At some point I plan on making one that goes the other way since it's not level all the way. And when minecraft tracks work I'll put a set of those in the middle and we can use the powered minecarts! There's a bit in the middle that seems to get clogged with chickens and pigs for some reason, so if you can think of a way to fix that, it would be nice.

desolation
10-12-2010, 07:08 AM
the sky river is a fun ride although it appears that boats, at least for me, were quite buggy this morning. reminded me of a log flume type ride.

Gnorlin
10-12-2010, 07:33 AM
Yeah they do get kinda buggy sometimes, especially when you go off a jump and go into the water a bit and it has to adjust you back to floating on top. Sometimes the boats have difficulty turning around the right direction too. It's still a fun way to travel, as long as there are no pigs and chickens clogging up the river.

Gnorlin
10-12-2010, 07:42 AM
I ran into a problem building the river road that I can't find a good solution to and I was wondering if anybody else had figured it out. So I'm building a long flat platform and I want to go down a block and continue building. Up is easy, you just put a block on the last one in the row:

xxx
oooo

But if you want to build down you have to put a block under the last one in the row, :

oooo
xxx

The only way I've found to do this is to drop down to the ground and build a pillar all the way back up which is a huge drain on my stone supply. No amount of shift hanging off the edge gets me where I want to go.

digiphreak
10-12-2010, 08:46 AM
I don't play so maybe this is an asinine suggestion, but can you just reverse your build so that you are building up instead of down? The up and down build are effectively the same thing, just approached from the opposite direction.

Gnorlin
10-12-2010, 09:35 AM
Well yeah, but that would make it so I'd have to line up across distances larger than I can see and I'd be worried about not meeting in the middle correctly.

digiphreak
10-12-2010, 09:53 AM
Ahh.

the_mink
10-12-2010, 02:28 PM
I think you have to go back and build horizontally from whatever you used to get that high in the air in the first place, if that's not even farther away than the ground is.

Oh, and I connected tunnels near my house to the underground railroad, but I only accidently figured out how the hell to get back out of there through a different tunnel. My first attempt came out of the wall on the opposite side of brien's house from the sculpture garden. I was dangerously close to come out through a wall in his living room. if you plan on buying it "some day", you might as well just buy it now for 10 euro. once it enters beta, Notch is doubling the price. plus, if you get it now, you'll be able to talk down to all those people who enter in at the beta stage by saying things like "pfft, i've been playing this game since it was Alpha, man."

Drewbie

Classic is free, I believe, while the alpha client with the auto-updating is what costs money. It may ask you to pay when you try to login, since your login should have been created when you downloaded the game. At least that's how it worked for me.

I've decided to work on a gallery project. The surface entrance is behind the treehouse, in a vector from the sculpture garden (which rocks, btw; make a Hank sculpture?), which I am going to expand to open near ground level at the treehouse instead of the current hilltop staired entrance. It will extend vertically from the surface to near bedrock, and probably 1000m or so horizontally from the entrance. 6m wide with half-block walls floor to ceiling, using glass blocks where the ceiling breaches the surface or other interesting phenomena are present. It will be grand.

Also: who's up for Jackass 3D tonight?

I think there was some sort of wierdness occurring sometime between Sunday and Tuesday night. I logged in to find a giant hole overtop of the gallery entrance, like someone dropped a 30m x 30m x 30m bomb that obliterated everything in the section, but left a non-flat, dirt covered bottom where what used to be stone and staircase existed before. I've repaired the damage, and didn't lose any valuable goodies, but it was a bit of a pain. Can anyone confirm how or why that terrain change occured, or can tell if it occured anywhere else? Or more importantly, if it will occur again?

So now that the Parthenon is done, I'm trying to plan my next big project. I originally intended to build Notre Dame, but felt that was too ambitious for my first endeavor in the game. Now I'm thinking I might just build an original design for a cathedral rather than an attempt at historical accuracy.

Meanwhile, I'm trying to shore up some kind of layout to my mine near my original tower and next to the Parthenon. I hollowed out pretty much the entire mountain above the normal surface and did kind of an art deco water feature on the front side since the face of the cliff was pretty close to symmetrical to begin with.

I see Gnorlin working on his tower, Murdoch working on his Gallery, and Brien working on his giant traps. Just curious what you all are building.

Oh, and that capitol building is ridiculous. I mean seriously. Holy shit.

Build the Pantheon: http://www.abcroma.com/Monumento_i.asp?N=13

I think it would be cool if we got a huge stack of signs and went on a signage spree. You know: "this way to the gallery, capitol and Drewbie's anus" and shit like that. Eventually we're gonna start running into each other and signs are the best way to create a common frame of reference. Defining "I'm working here, please work somewhere else" would also be nice; I don't want to create some sort of fascist property system, but a way of noting where everyone has there stuff would be a great way to avoid bumping into each other.

36 half-steps up per turn; 18m per turn. I plan to do a dual internal staircase. I want the interior to be open, but I may make an inner rail. It will be topped by an appropriately lavish abode.

This will be built at the end of the current gallery, rising from the bedrock, at the intersection of the current gallery tunnel and the 3 proposed tunnels running in cardinal directions away from it.

You talking about the ginormous capitol building I'm working on? I found out there is a limit to how high you can build. I had to abruptly cut off the rotunda because it wouldn't let me build any higher. Also, I need to figure out a lighting scheme. It gets really dark in there now that I have most of the roof on it.

Drewbie
10-20-2010, 10:09 PM
Yes I am. My first building was a tower on top of a hill so I've hit the height limit before too. Now before I start construction, I figure out how high I'll go and do a test pillar first to make sure I'm down deep enough for the ground level. My next big build I'm gonna plan it so it's below the clouds too. It sucks working in them and it's weird to be inside and having clouds rolling through.

Yea, the zombie grinder didn't get blown up because of the server crash. That was brien and I and a ton of dynamite. A fun time had by all, I assure you. He found out that zombie's won't spawn in certain areas and the location of the grinder meant it wouldn't ever actually work right. So we "moved" it. The new one is vastly superior anyway.

I'm creating an artifact. It's powered by entropy and crawls across the landscape, replicating itself from whatever raw materials it manages to completely enfold, imposing order from horizon to horizon. My artifact has no name. As your Parthenons and Benders are torn down and their constituent parts are turned to slag in the furnace of progress, the rate of increasing precision will climb and your pocket universe will spiral inexorably toward cold, unwilling submission, bound in the tendrils of modernity. This process will continue until nothing organic remains to power my fleet of self-replicating artifacts, at which point they will grind to a halt, satisfied. The grey vistas and harsh angles left behind will herald the final heat death of your world, with nothing to betray what came before but the clouds rolling overhead.

Actually this is kind of boring, I'm gonna play some more Mass Effect 2.

At some point I may blow up the Parthenon just cause that area is too congested and I've got different ideas for what I wanna do with my main tower set-up. I added a second tower and am debating where to go from here. I've very close to having the whole mountain near there completely hollowed out and in most places digging anywhere there will result in a fall into the caverns. I also closed off my main entrance in favor of a secret passage I'm quite proud of. Now I just need to decide if I want to remove all the floors inside and essentially make it a big cavern or what I want to do.

Gnorlin, the article says to make a portal you just make an arch out of obsidian, then light the passage underneath on fire. Seems pretty easy to me. Phase Two of the Gallery is complete. It's a pretty stunning visual.

Phase Three is extending the Gallery about 100m farther, ending near the ocean along that vector. There I'll build my tower in Phase 4, as described on a previous page. I'm thinking of some ways to make it more distinctive, using a backlit waterfall technique I saw at The Mink's place. It will require making a crater, starting at bedrock at probably 2m vertical per 1m horizontal radiating out in all directions from the tower. That plan will be an absolutely massive phase 4 though, so maybe I'll keep it simple; depends on how Phase 3 goes, whether survey indicates there's enough room and whether this game still interests me at that point.

I'll update the map tomorrow

It's still uploading, but in a few minutes the latest map will be here:

It still doesn't have mink's stuff, I'll try expanding the size next time.

Ugh. My area looks horrible since I took down my initial tower. It was built in a hurry and someone haphazardly so it wasn't symmetrical with the second tower which I spent more time planning. I'm pretty sure I'm going to level out the hill I'm built on, do two more towers to frame it right, the build a glass roof for my mine underneath the mountain.

Gnorlin
10-25-2010, 08:25 AM
I made a portal near my tower just off the road for the impending update. I also made a sweet pit out past my tower a ways, be careful at the very bottom though as you may fall through the world.

Frank and I took turns jumping through the world in the pit under Deso's pyramid. Good times.

Drewbie
10-26-2010, 12:48 PM
Once I've got a viable exit, I'll have to show you guys the secret entrance to my towers. The current ladders will be going away as soon as I'm done rebuilding the first tower and fix the rest of the stuff up top.

I was thinking about portals... how is the altitude of the portal in "hell" going to correspond with the altitude of the portal in the real world? I've only read that in north-south-east-west/X-Y terms, hell is on a 1/16th scale of the real world. Are all the portals in hell on one flat altitude/Z plane? Or the same altitude as each corresponding portal in the real world? Or is that dimension also scaled by 1/16? It'll be interesting to see if you can go from deep underground to the top of a high tower as quickly as you can move horizontally.

Excellent question. When is that patch supposed to drop? On Halloween or before?

Drewbie
10-26-2010, 12:55 PM
I looked and see it's supposed to hit on Halloween. Also I see that with the new update that torches will eventually burn out and have to be re-lit. That sucks.

I think I might set up something to upload a new picture every day or two.

For now here's the latest:

http://arvenis.reebosak.net/minecraft/output.png I'm not going to post it in the forums because it is 15114x7818!!

It doesn't have mink's stuff in it. HOW FAR OUT IS THAT SHIT!!??

Heh! I missed this before... the big map's getting pretty close. I'd say it only needs like 10% or 15% more in the east direction (down and to the right).

Uggh. I really don't like this.

Are you sure it's not just for single player or something? Is there a way to do a server-override thing that makes everyone's candles keep burning?

All planced torches are being replaced by lanterns (which burn forever), any future torches will burn out. If you want light you'll make lanterns.

The power went out here briefly so the server might be in a weird state, if you notice anything I have a backup from 2:30 today that I could roll back to.

Gnorlin, you may want to rethink using MCAdmin, apparently the dev is a huge douche and doesn't understand why full access backdoors in your software are a bad idea, both security-wise and ethics-wise:

BAD NEWS: portals don't appear to work in SMP

Murdoch
11-01-2010, 07:53 AM
what mode exactly are we running? SMP is survival multiplayer? But we can't die and such, so, huh? Which set of Notch notes should we be following to figure out the game status?

Gnorlin
11-01-2010, 08:52 AM
We're running SMP, the only other option I think is creative (but i'm not sure how to actually do that). I have no idea where we should be looking for SMP changes.

Drewbie
11-01-2010, 09:40 AM
The good thing with creative is there's apparently no height limit to buildings. There are apparently several bad things though.

Also, biomes do appear to work in SMP so the next time I play, I may end up wandering until I find a snowy area. Then I'll build a portal so when they work I can use it and not have to ever walk again.

yes, we are running SMP, but health and mob damage are bugged, along with minecarts, portals, water buckets and a bunch of other crap. Notch tweeted a few days ago saying he is now focussing on fixing all the shit that doesn't work in SMP as his top priority for the next patch. it sounds like health and damage fixing is on the top of that list, so hopefully next patch will make SMP a bit more dangerous.

Drewbie

We may want to think about doing something defensive in anticipation. Or not. I don't know. I know I'm gonna be planting a wheat field asap so I can have something to eat when I jump off my buildings instinctively.

Gnorlin
11-04-2010, 06:47 AM
Your buildings are tall, you'll likely be dead and won't have to worry about eating.

Also Lightstone (http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Lightstone) is pretty sweet, it's as bright as sunlight!

Also here's the latest map (http://arvenis.reebosak.net/minecraft/output-11-04-10.png).

I've given up trying to find mink's shit, this current map takes two passes of MCMap to create, but if I even try to make it big enough to encompass everything it takes four passes and crashes more often than not

1. So you download this here thing : http://www.mediafire.com/?3ia4j9s96q4mtbl
2. Extract it to your minecraft Directory

In windows 7 it's in c:/Users/[your user name]/AppData/Roaming/.minecraft
If you have earlier windows or Mac, you're on your own.

3. double click the patcher jar.
4. Tell the patcher where your minecraft jar is, it should be in bin under the folder above.
5. Select Ambient Occlusion.
6. If you want a minimap on your screen check SimpleMap as well
7. If you want Better Grass (I have no idea how it's better?!?) check Better Grass
8. If you want to chat the same person by hitting Tab check SMChat (for some reason you have to select SimpleMap as well for this to work)
9. Click the Patch button.
10. Excitement
