    Virtual Reality

Well, I guess virtual reality is the next frontier for porn gaming. In spite of myself, I'm actually starting to be intrigued. It really sounds like the experience is a quantum leap in terms of "wow factor" and general immersion. Not hard to believe. So let's say I buy one of these things, if it's like... $200 or $300. What are the options?

The Oculus Rift is the one everyone knows about, of course:

The latest leaked photos of the HTC Vive look pretty cool:

And of course the PlayStation VR ("Project Morpheus") is there if you have a PS4 and like to be disappointed by a lack of anything cross-platform:

Then finally there's SteamVR, which I thought was its own distinct hardware thing, but it looks like they're just piling on with the HTC Vive.

I have no idea when any of this is going to come out of its nascent phase, nor do I know what any of them will cost. But for now, it's exciting!

My brother is huge into VR. He contributed to the original Oculus Rift kickstarter and bought the second generation one as well. I've used both version a couple of times and they both made me unbearably sick after about 20 minutes and it took me hours to recover. It looks amazing but they've got to figure out whatever's making me ill. My favorite thing he showed me was a recreation what's his face's hangout in Ready Player One, complete with arcade cabinets that you could walk up to and play.

Ouch. I would guess it's something to do with field of view, or maybe motion blur. I've never used a VR helmet yet, but if FOV is set too far from what your eyes normally see in real life, even 2D gaming can cause some people to get motion sickness. Can only imagine the effect would be exacerbated when it's wrapped around your whole face.

Oh, god, I can't remember his name either. Book made such an impression. Hiro Protagonist, maybe.

Speaking of your brother, I avenged his death in Shadow of Mordor the other day. You can let him know when you see him at Christmas. I killed an orc, and the game politely informed me that I'd avenged the fallen "rowan_u," which totally didn't pull me out of the moment or anything. Make sure he knows how easy it was.

The biggest triggering factor for the sickness was moving my virtual body in a way that my physical body wasn't moving. most of the simulations allow you to look around you with the headset tracking but if you want to turn your body you have to use a controller/keyboard.

Oculus Rift is taking preorders starting Wednesday. And I barely know anything about it, or the Vive, or anything else. First mover advantage does nothing for you, Oculus! You have lost my hearts and minds! I will make my decision after you have been on the market for months and months, foolish company!

CES has both the Oculus and the Vive (pre-final version) on full display, so now there are direct comparisons being made.

    tl;dw: Vive > Oculus

Both of these devices are far more cumbersome than I realized, with cords and boxes all over the place. The Vive is decidedly more so, but the extra boxes add to the immersion by letting you move around the room a bit more. Also sounds like the Vive has considerably more impressive demo software.

HTC Vive pre-orders start on Feb. 29 (LEAP DAY!!)..... and no price announced yet. It gonn' be 'spensive.

Also, the infographic on that article suggests the PSVR ("Morpheus") system will cost $1125 based on a "leaked" Amazon price.
