In X-Men: Apocalypse there was a pretty good jab at how bad 3 was. After they walked out of the theater from watching Return of the Jedi
That might also have been a bit of self deprecating humor, since it was the third First Class movie but no, I choose to believe it referred to The Last Stand.
I saw Doctor Strange this weekend, and I liked it. I had two complaints:
#1 - Porcupine Rubberwax does not have a convincing American accent. There, I said it.
#2 - The big scary bad guy at the end, with explosions and shit falling out of the sky, which is basically how every Marvel movie ends. I'd have liked it if Dormammu had been quiet and eerie. Imagine if, rather than Hong Kong exploding and a bunch of giant glowing balls coming into our dimension, instead a solitary, silent, dark figure quietly appeared in the center of all the destruction, and just stood there slowly materializing. The music does one of those creepy things music does, and they look at the figure and say "oh shit, that's Dormammu, we need to make him go away." Maybe they try to strike a bargain or something. But instead we got a huge holographic face shooting lasers.
Wow, did they really get Michael Keaton to play a villainous mechanical Birdman (a.k.a. The Vulture)? I like that.
There was a joke in here about Marvel movies, so I'm putting this here.
Oh Jesus. I can't tell which of them is worse at this game, but "During our sex scene, I felt your dick rubbing on me" was pretty killer.
I saw Logan on Saturday, it was real good. Loved everything about it, aside from a couple extremely minor plot holes that might have been explained by cut footage anyway (the movie's already long at 2:15).
Why were the kids running from the soldiers at the end, did they panic? Bear in mind they were all raised as stone cold mutant killing machines. And why did they all speak perfect, unaccented English? I would understand picking up some, like Laura, just due to proximity to the guards and doctors. But they were raised in Mexico by Mexican nurses.
Like I said, minor stuff. The movie had some incredibly intense scenes (The Casino Scene had me giddy with horror), and boy howdy did they ever go at the R rating with gusto.
In my opinion, this director (James Mangold) has now created the two best (or two of the best) movies in the X-Men universe, in Wolverine and Logan. Logan is tops for me.
I'm sure there's many differences between the two, but how does it compare to the new Mad Max. I hope this trend of movies that are both Action-y and Good continues.
Well, it's hard to compare them directly except in terms of how much I enjoyed them. Maybe the bloom will come off the rose with time and additional viewings, but right now I'd say Logan is right up there with Fury Road in my mind. They're different sub-genres within "action," but they're both soaring examples of nearly-perfect action movies.
Logan was much more brutal than Mad Max, I'd say it deserved its hard R far more. Not even sure why Mad Max was R (would have sworn it was PG-13). That said, Logan was considerably less explosive than Mad Max, due mainly to the fact that it involved hand-to-hand fighting rather than truck-full-of-gas-to-car-full-of-gas fighting.
The best Logan analog I can come up with is John Wick plus Little Miss Sunshine.
