I loved the first half of Jeepers Creepers (1). The moment the "creature" was fully revealed, it turned into a vanilla monster movie and I lost interest -- but prior to that, the movie was really creepy and good.

This is a beautiful distillation of a concept I've struggled to explain, by the way. It's why I love foreign movies, and why I like to watch them (and any anime I see) with subtitles rather than dubbed over in English. Bad acting doesn't sound as bad in a language I can't understand... I just hear the emotion and intensity, and not the terribly-nuanced grammatical inflection. Bizarre actions and reactions can be shrugged off in the name of "well, whatever, they're Japanese."
In other words, I'm culturally ignorant and I like it.
I second that emotion, I also watch in Japanese with subtitles. Case in point, Takeashi Miike's Dead or Alive. It was a very well done police/Yakuza/Triad drama in Hong Kong. Then the last 5 minutes hit, and they are growing weapons out of their arms and chests, and eventually going nuclular (sp). American movie, it would be the worst, Japanese movie, shoulder shrug and watch Dead or Alive part 2.
I got a duo of cannibal flicks for your Halloween enjoyment. In the randomness that is my iconclastic life, I was watching a Netflix streamer during the week at work, and popped in the DvD at home. I thought one was a zombie flick, and the other was a typical horror flick. Both ended up being cannibal movies, so winner, winner, bad 20 something actor's tounge for dinner.
I'll start with "Gnaw", which I thought would be a zombie movie. Wrong-o, turns out going on holiday in England end with you and your friends being served at a roadside hamberger stand. I am getting into English movies, that proper accent when confronted with maniacs is priceless, and plus I have the hots for their ladies. This film would fall into the torture porn category, not quite as bloddy as Saw or Hostel, but brutal none the less. Creepy and violent, and cat lovers should stay away. 7 outta 10 IMHO.
Next is "Wrong Turn", made in 2003. Think Deliverence meets Hostel, with hot chicks and no Ned Beatty ass. I liked this a lot, as it was set in West Virginia, and the creepiness of the remote territory reminds me of the trips across Northern Michigan we take to the in-laws. So yes, 6 beautiful people actors get chased, killed, and eaten by inbred hillbillies in very intense fashion. Not the most original plot, but Ericka Dyshu (sp) is eye candy, and the tone is very dark, and melikes that! 8 outta 10 rotten hillbilly teefer stubs.
Do you mean Eliza Dushku?
Just looked it up on IMDB and yep, that's her. It's also got Emmanuelle Chriqui from Entourage so the hot chick quotient is pretty damned high!
Tru dat! Too bad they ate Emmanuelle's leg, does she have a limp in Entourage?
I just saw Session 9 on Netflix streaming, and IMHO, give it 4 volts on the 10 point eletric chair. This was set in a real, and totally creepy former insane asylum. Then they cast it and filmed it, that's where they went wrong. 3 points for location, and 1 because it had a creep factor. Newsflash to directors; while SOME guessing, and "WTF was that" moments are fine in a movie, please remember that we the audience do not live in your head, so going from Point A to rolling the credits, please involve Point B and C as well. I think the directors intentions were good here, just wish he would have let us in on it as well.
1. Get an awesome location to shoot a movie.
2. ??????
3. Roll credits, get that direct to video profit!
I really liked Session 9. Part of it, anyway. The location and setting were great, and it's been a long time since I saw it, but I seem to recall having a similar impression of this movie as I did of Jeepers Creepers -- really good until some point in the plot, then "meh."
It does have one of the best "lights turning off in a scary hallway" scenes ever, though.
The hallway with the gloves hanging down? That was a nice effect. My beef was that the plot wasn't fleshed out enough, we didn't see the WHY for the WHAT that happened.
I saw [REC] last week on DvD. The bonus was that I got to see it with my 64 y/o dad since our power was out. The bad was he liked it since it didn't "gross him out", my disappointment being that it was a zombie movie, and there was nary even a hint of intestine to be found. This was a PoV movie, or shot "shaky cam" style a la Blair Witch Project, and the last half of Cannibal Holocaust. It is a Spanish movie, with a different take on zombies. Overall I give it a 7 outta 10, there was some nice scares and geriactric creepiness (zombie in granny panties), but the end kind of lost the tracks that the zombie train was taking. It clocks in at 84 minutes, so a nice and short flick. Avoid if you dislike subtitles.
And my promise to you fine reader........if we are shooting a porno someday, and I have the camera, I SWEAR I'll drop the camera and aid the main ass kicker in the group if a zombie breakout occurs, and not watch like a dork instead.
